On Tuesday, March 1, 2022, R Dean Kilby, 94 peacefully passed away in his sleep. He was born in Rugby, VA to the late Lee & Connie Kilby. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty Jean Kilby, his brothers Carol Kilby, Lane Kilby, and Junior Kilby, and his sisters Irene Johnson, and Barbara Jean Kilby.
He is survived by his children, Rejeanna Barnes (Rick), Joetta Kilby, Kim Bowman (Bill), and Chip Kilby (Lisa). He is also survived by his five grandchildren, Jason Barnes (Eli), Sarah Barnes, Tim Fitzmorris, Justin Fitzmorris and Ava Kilby and one great-grandchild, Benjamin Barnes. He also left behind two sisters, Iva Roland and Maxine Barnes.
Dean Kilby grew up during the depression in the Appalachians, left home early to join the Navy during WWII (serving proudly on the USS North Carolina,) then came home to use the GI Bill to complete his education through his Masters Degree. Along the way he taught at 5 schools, was principal at 4 schools (one of which was named in his honor, Kilby Elementary,) and worked in the School Board central office. He was a long-time member of St Paul Methodist Church. He and his wife got to travel the world in their later years, but mostly loved coming home to their kids and grandkids.
He was a loving father and husband, an educator, and a mentor to so many. He lived the American dream and raised his children to work hard, be strong and confident, yet humble and compassionate. He believed in the Lord Jesus Christ and is now celebrating with the wife he adored! This world is a far better place for what he did for so many children and adults.
