Phillip "Papa Smurf" Newson was born November 18, 1948 to Thomas Newson and Laverne Greenlaw. On May 26, 2022 a loving father and grandfather was called home to be with the Lord at the age of 73. Phillip was a recent graduate of Roosevelt High School class of 1968 before proudly serving years in the U. S. Navy in fall of September 1968. He retired from Gary Housing Authority in November of 2020 after 30 years of employment. He was a member of VFW and American Legion. He was a board member at Gary Freedom House, Freemason, and 3D MC Gary Chapter. Phillip had many hobbies of fishing, camping, shooting pool and public speaking all over the world. He was preceded in death by his parents Thomas Newson and Laverne Greenlaw, wife Jacqueline Lynn Newson, sister Willie Jean Newson, brothers Darren Newson and Marlon Newson, Sr., daughter Patricia Ann Newson and grandchild Javae Crawford. Phillip is survived by daughters Fadena Newson, Pauline (Allison) Bronaugh, Sireese (Tony) Simpson and Christiana Howard; two sons Daryl Crawford and Randall (Jasmine) Crawford; three brothers William Newson, Thomas Newson and Brian Newson; special friend Dena Newson and close friend Henry Cockrell and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Visitation Wednesday June 8, 2022 from 12-8:00p.m. Family hours 6-8:00p.m. Funeral service Thursday June 9, 2022 at 10:00a.m. All services at the Guy & Allen Chapel. Interment Evergreen Cemetery.
