It is with great sadness that the family of Peter Kinsman Zimmerman announce that he died on September 2, 2023, in Salisbury, MD . Peter fought a long and determined battle against metastatic melanoma. Born on September 12, 1947, in Syracuse NY, Peter was adopted by William and Eleanor Kinsman Zimmerman.
Peter is survived by his wife of 49 years, Carol, son Colin Zimmerman (wife Leslie) and granddaughter Isabella. He is remembered by his family and friends for his wonderful sense of humor, witty puns, love of music, exceptional writing talent and his deep interest in politics.
Peter began his political journey early being elected as student body president at both Onondaga Community College and the State University of New York at Oswego. Upon graduating from college Peter was recruited by the John Lindsay for President campaign in 1972. After Lindsay withdrew Peter went to work for George McGovern in Florida, Wisconsin and then California. His political friendships brought him to Tucson, AZ in December of '72. He started his long career in Tucson by working as a community organizer for the United Farm Workers. In 1973, Peter was hired to run Merlin's Pub, a University of Arizona student owned bar. He met Carol in early 1974 when he hired her as bouncer at the pub. They married in Sudbury, Mass on August 4, 1974.
Peter partnered with Mike Foudy to form Meek, Foudy & Zimmerman, a public relations and political consulting firm. In 1989, after working with several advertising and public relations firms, Peter founded Zimmerman & Associates which later became Zimmerman Public Affairs. Over the course of his career, he managed both candidate and issue campaigns and worked for dozens of local, state and national companies. He garnered more than 50 advertising awards and received the Tucson Ad Federation Silver Medalist Award.
Peter dedicated years to the American Youth Soccer regions in Pima County. He coached, refereed and served as a regional and area director. Peter fondest memories are those with spent with his close friends and his Friday lunch group.
In 2015, Peter and Carol relocated to Salisbury, MD. Peter kept in touch with his Tucson friends and missed the desert very much. During this time, he was able to track down information about his birth mother and was pleased to learn that he had two half-brothers (deceased) and a niece and nephew living in Tennessee.
