Peter D. Yahner, 81, passed away peacefully at home January 25, 2021 surrounded by family after a long battle with cancer.
He was born April 18, 1939 in Akron, Ohio. He spent his grade school years at St. Sebastian and graduated from St. Vincent High School class of '57, and then on to get his Associates degree from the University of Dayton in Engineering. He was employed upon graduation at General Tire for the next 40 years. He was an Army Veteran in the Signal Corps serving two years in Asmara, Eritrea at Kagnew Station. Peter was an avid and passionate member of the North East Ohio Live Steam club for 30 years. He possessed an unbelievable talent in working with wood, creating stained glass, and building trains and clocks. He will be most remembered for his quick wit and dry sense of humor.
Peter was preceded in death by his parents, Beatrice (Williams) and Donald Yahner; son, Peter; and brother, Father Gordon Yahner. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Vera (Ranostaj); siblings, Stephen (Joyce), Caroline (Joe) Szeremet, and Sarah (Mike) Mahon; children, Stephen and Rebecca (Steve) Vieltorf; grandchildren, Kiel and Michael Yahner, Lauren Kil, and Hailey and Meghan Vieltorf, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of calling hours, Mass of Christian Burial will be held 12pm, Wednesday February 3rd at St. Hilary Catholic Church, 2750 W Market St, Fairlawn, with visitation 1 hour prior. Private burial services will be held at a later date for immediate family at the Western Reserve National Cemetery.
