Peter Barnett Metzger

Springdale, SC ..... It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the passing of our beloved father, husband, and friend, Peter Metzger, who left us on May 3, 2023. He was charismatic, lived a rich life, and as a result, had vibrant stories. Peter was born in Ossining, NY; but he grew up in Narberth township, just outside of Philadelphia, PA. He loved "Philly" and would ride the train into the city to get hoagies, pizza, and Italian water ice. Peter's love for tennis pulled him south-- he had heard the weather was better for matches. He attended the University of South Carolina and eventually began teaching tennis throughout the Columbia area. He had a passion for nutrition and fitness which culminated in him opening Nice -N-Natural, a health food restaurant near the USC campus, which operated for 31 years (1981-2012). Peter was a loving and devoted father and husband. He loved family vacations, oldies music, and collecting unique coins and stamps. Peter is survived by his wife, Elaine; his daughter Dr. Kallie Metzger (Luke Hallman); and his son Matthew Metzger. He also has a sister, Cyndy Ewing (Blain Ewing) of Sullivan's Island and a brother Richard Metzger, of Allentown PA. Peter was predeceased by his parents, Don and Betty Metzger as well as his older sister, Susie Heaver.
When Peter retired, he adored long evening walks with his "pack" of dogs (Granger, Hampton, and Jack). We like to imagine he is reunited with his "boy-dogs", and they all enjoy warm days in the sun with a never-ending supply of tennis balls. Peter will be greatly missed by all those who loved him.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to your local Humane Society or Animal Rescue. A celebration of life will be held by the family later.
