Peter G. Chavez, age 40, a resident of Albuquerque passed away on April 18, 2003, with his loving family and friends at his side. Peter started riding horses as a young boy and became a professional jockey at the age of 16. Peter left riding to get a welding major at TV I in Albuquerque. Peter returned to riding in the early 80s and holds the record of most wins in a day at Raton, NM and was ranked 20th in the nation for wins with Quarter Horses in 1988. On April 21, 1989 he was injured in a racing accident in St. George, Utah and was cared for by his family since 1992. Peter was good with his family and friends and will be deeply missed. Mr. Chavez is survived by his daughter, Miranda Pacheco, his parents, Gilbert and Rachel Chavez, one sister, Frances Rodriguez and her husband Jason, one brother, Ivan R. Chavez and his wife, Rae Jean, one niece, Mattalynn Chavez, two nephews, Thomas Rodriguez and Ivan Adam Chavez and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Mr. Chavez was a member of the Catholic Church. A rosary will be recited on Monday evening at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 1860 Griegos NW, at 7:00 p.m. by Marjorie Rodriguez. A final visitation will be on Tuesday morning from 9:30 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. by Father Joe Vigil. Interment will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Lee Gutierrez, Virgil Otero, David Rodriguez, Ray Valverde, Herbert Gaston, and Gerald Quinn. Honorary pallbearers will be Rosie Harris, Cheryl Sanchez and Monica Felix.
