Captain Peter M. Arburr, 84, of Newington, passed away at the Hospital of Central Connecticut on Tuesday, June 15, 2021. He was born on September 13, 1936 in New Britain, CT to the late Hank and Mary (Hudak) Arburr.
Captain Arburr graduated from the University of Connecticut with a degree in civil engineering. While in college, he was on the JV Basketball team and later refereed. He was also a member of UConn's ROTC program and after graduation, entered the U.S. Army.
After his time in the military, upon moving to Newington, he became Newington's first town engineer, a position he held for 33 years. During his tenure, he helped guide the development of the town for its betterment.
In his youth, he was a member of the New Britain Boys' Club. He loved golf and accumulated many trophies. Peter always looked forward to his trips to the casino, even when it entailed a five hour bus trip to Atlantic City. He was a devout Catholic and communicant of the Church of the Holy Spirit.
Peter leaves his life partner and wife of 56 years, Carol Gagliardi Arburr, two sons, Michael Arburr and his wife, Andrea, of Glastonbury, and David Arburr and his wife, Sandra, of Oxford, and three grandchildren, Dana and Noah Arburr of Glastonbury and Nathan Arburr of Mineville, NY. He also leaves his sisters, Gail Ascare of Groton and Teri Arburr of New Britain, along with several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sister, Joan Arburr and his brother, Francis Arburr.
The family will receive friends at Duksa Family Funeral Homes at Newington Memorial, 20 Bonair Ave., Newington, on Monday, June 21 from 4:00 to 7:00pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, June 22 at 10:00am at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 183 Church St., Newington. Following the mass, he will be laid to rest at West Meadow Cemetery with military honors.
