Services for Mr. Percy H. Werner, age 99 of Kilgore, Texas, are scheduled for 10:00 AM Thursday, May 27, 2021 at the Calvary Baptist Church in Tyler, Texas, with Bro. Andrew O'Kelley officiating. Interment will follow in the Hopewell Cemetery with services under the direction of Caudle-Rutledge-Daugherty Funeral Home in Lindale, Texas. Percy H. Werner, son of the late Clayton C. and Minnie Minervah (Knapp) Werner, was born in New Hampton, Iowa on January 20, 1922, went to be with his Lord and Savior on May 14, 2021 at the age of 99 years, 3 months, and 24 days. He graduated from New Hampton High School in 1940 and joined the United States Army in 1942. He was stationed at Camp Fanin in Tyler, Texas for basic training when he met the love of his life, Sarah Ruth Shank. Percy was deployed to Germany in April of 1943 and was in C-Company, 79th Division and served under General Patton. He was in the Normandy invasion in France and went to Holland, Belguim, and Germany with WWII Chec and Occupational Army until the Spring of 1945. Percy and Sarah were married on February 18, 1944. He also worked for Tyler Pipe as a "Master Pattern Maker" until 1987, when he retired after 36 and a half years. After retirement, he worked in his shop "Werner Furniture Shop", where he crafted many furniture items for his wife, children, grandchildren, friends, and loved ones. He was a Master Craftsman. After marrying Ruth in 1944, they joined the Calvary Baptist Church of Tyler, where he was a deacon and a member until his passing. He worked in the five-year-old department for Training Union Leader, sang in the choir, and received the Emeritus Award for being the longest deacon at Calvary Baptist Church. He also loved to sing in the "Messiah" at Christmas time at Marvin Methodist Church under the direction of Clyde Wofford. Percy was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Ruth Shank Werner in 2014, infant daughter, parents, brothers, Ralph, Clayton, Freddie and Harvey Werner, sisters, Alice, Bertha, and Sarah. Percy is survived by his daughters, Kathleen Godsoe and husband, Carl of Anchorage, Alaska; Marilyn Mowris and husband, Steven of Bois d'arc, Missouri; and Janet Rowden and husband, Norman of Kilgore, Texas; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Werner of Lucerner Valley, California; 8 grandchildren, Andrew Miller and wife, Michele; Carrie Decker and husband, Brian; Timothy Miller and wife, Carol; Steven Godsoe and wife, Elizabeth; Tabitha Miller and husband, Don; Benjamin Mowris; Keren Hill and husband, Justin; and Rebekah Dowell and husband, Eli; 18 great grandchildren, Autumn, Mara and Willa Miller, Kayslee, Josiah, and Noelle Decker, Oliver Godsoe, Emilee and Sarah Miller, Alivia Mowris, Collin and Kyle Hill, Joel, Ethan, Seth, Lucas, Corban, and Anna Dowell; and numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Wednesday, May 26, 2021 at the Caudle-Rutledge-Daugherty Funeral Home in Lindale, Texas.
