Penny O'Keefe (nee Carson) was born July 22, 1941 in Glen Ridge, New Jersey and peacefully passed away on February 28, 2024 at her home in Durango, Colorado.
Raised alongside her brother and sister in Cedar Grove, New Jersey, Penny's life was a testament to love, resilience, and quiet strength. On April 15, 1960, she embarked on a journey of marriage with her high school sweetheart Dick Weber. They settled in Montclair, New Jersey, welcoming their first child, Tammy, in 1961. They purchased their first home in Glen Ridge, New Jersey and welcomed their second child, Jim, in 1963. They moved their family to Laramie, Wyoming in 1972, and moved again to Durango, Colorado in 1976. Despite the challenges that life brought, including the dissolution of her marriage to Dick and the loss of her second husband, Doug O'Keefe, Penny remained steadfast in her resolve. In 1992, Penny found companionship with Bob Harrington, with whom she shared more than 30 years in a loving partnership.
Penny's adventurous spirit led her to explore the world, from the Amazon rainforest to Icelandic glaciers, Mt. Kilimanjaro to most of Colorado's fourteeners. Closer to home, she found joy in skiing at Purgatory (Durango Mountain Resort) and participating in her beloved book club, of which she was a member for more than 25 years. Professionally, Penny forged her own path as a Bed & Breakfast owner, and as a tax consultant, running her own successful business (The Penny Pincher) for 46 years and fostering meaningful relationships with her clients. She was also a dedicated philanthropist, giving back to the community she loved through generous contributions to local charities.
Penny is predeceased by her brother William "Buck" Clark Carson. She is survived by her partner Bob Harrington, her sister Candice Carson (George Banker), sister-in-law Marty Carson, her daughter Tammy (Robert) Au-France, son Jim (Adrienne) Weber, her grandchildren Matt Payne, Christy Payne, Carrie (TC) Whitaker, Kealy (Vance) Hawk, and Tessa Weber, and great-grandchildren Hayden Parvin, Rue Hawk, Billy Hawk, and SJ Hawk. Her absence leaves a void in the lives of those who knew her, but her memory will be cherished always.
