Peggy Wayland, 86, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2023, at her home in Manassas, VA.
Peggy was born September 1, 1936, to the late James and Maggie Clater. She was predeceased by her husband, Richard V. Wayland, three brothers, Joe, Bobby, and Randolph, and a sister, Shirley. She is survived by a son, Richard Clater Wayland (Cindy); two grandchildren, Dennis (Kate) and Kelly; and a great-granddaughter, Mia Wayland. She is also survived by her twin sister, Jean Burke of North Carolina; brother, Ernest (Evon) of Front Royal, VA; and younger sister, Ruth Merchant, of Front Royal. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
Peggy was born and raised in Sperryville, VA. In 1957, she married Richard V. Wayland, who passed away in October 2020. Dickie was the love of her life; they were married for over 61 years when Dickie passed away.
Peggy was a US Navy wife, and she and Rick traveled with Dickie to posts in Portsmouth, VA, and Millington Naval Air Station in Memphis, TN. Peggy and Dickie retired to Slate Mills, VA, after his US Navy career. While living in Slate Mills, Peggy worked at The Corner Store in Sperryville, which was owned by her brother, Randolph, and brother-in-law, Wilson Burke. Most of her time, however, was spent being a wife and mom, and tending to their house. She loved flowers and had several beautiful flower gardens in their yard. She had a knack for flower arranging, and her bouquets could often be seen adorning their dining room table. Peggy was an excellent cook, and has passed on several of her recipes to her grandchildren. Two family favorites were her corn pudding and salmon ball.
Peggy dearly loved her grandchildren, and from an early age, Dennis and Kelly spent time with their grandparents at their home in Slate Mills. Many memories were made over the years. Peggy was particularly enamored with great-granddaughter, Mia. At family gatherings, Peggy's face would light up whenever Mia was around.
In 2016, Peggy and Dickie moved to Culpeper, VA. Following Dickie's passing, Peggy moved to Manassas, VA, to be closer to her family. She made many friends at Caton Merchant House assisted living in Manassas, and was visited often by family and friends.
Arrangements are being handled by Clore-English Funeral Home of Culpeper. A time of visitation will take place at the funeral home on Wednesday, May 3 at 12:00 noon, immediately followed by a funeral service at 1:00 p.m. and interment at Culpeper National Cemetery, where a short graveside ceremony will be held. The funeral and interment will be officiated by Rev. Ronald Poe of Woodville Baptist Church, where Peggy and Dickie were active members for many years.
