Peggy Jean Hyde passed away Saturday, May 18, 2024, surrounded by her loving and devoted family. She was born on September 27, 1942 in Conroe, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her mother Lucille Johnson, her grandmother Mary Jane Craig, her aunt Willie Edwards, and her cousin Tommy Edwards.
Peggy is survived by her husband Marvin Eugene (Gene) Hyde, her husband of 61 years, three children - William Craig Hyde and his wife Alison of Conroe, Texas; daughter Reesa Ann Ammons and her husband Christopher of Tomball, Texas; and son Wesley Everett Hyde and his wife Shannon of Gladewater, Texas. Peggy is survived by four grandchildren - William Connor Hyde, his wife Stacy Marie and their daughter Evelyn Jade of Denver, Colorado; Mary Alice Hyde of Conroe, Texas; Paige Elizabeth Ammons, and Zachary Thomas Ammons of Tomball, Texas. Peggy is also survived by her sister Patrica Lynn Gindrup, her husband Thomas Alan Gindrup, Sr. and their children and grandchildren.
She was raised by her mother Lucille, her grandmother Mary Jane, and her Aunt Willie. She loved roller skating so much as a child that her mother said that she could roller-skate before she could walk. She graduated from Conroe High School in 1961 as Salutatorian, was named to the Dean's List, and was a three-year letterman of the CHS basketball team. She enjoyed listening to country music, sewing, cooking, and teaching others. She was a fan of all sports, especially the Houston Oilers, and the Astros. She was such an Astros fan that she actually cried when they won their first World Series in 2017.
After she retired from teaching in 2002, Peggy enjoyed traveling with her husband Gene when they took numerous cruises to the Caribbean and Alaska. Her favorite pastimes included Sudoku and supported Gene as he would hit the slot machines hard and often. She always tithed their winnings to the First Baptist Church of Conroe, where she taught Sunday school.
Peggy lived her life with an undying faith in God as his servant, a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her earliest ambition was to be a teacher and realized her dream as a teacher of mathematics at Conroe High School, where she taught thousands of students throughout her 35-year career. She was awarded the Conroe Education Association Teacher-of-the-Year for the 2001-2002 school year and earned the Favorite Teacher Award by the class of 1973 at their 20th reunion. She spent quite a few years as the senior class sponsor and active in the annual senior blood drive. She always kept a special place in her heart for "her sons" - John Whittington, Kevin Morton, Matthew Burleigh, and her own son Craig.
Her proudest moments included seeing her children graduate, marry, and have families of their own. Watching her children and grandchildren grow up and participate in their activities always made her smile, and sometimes even cry with pride.
Peggy's family wishes to give loving thanks to her nurses Keri, Stacy, and Joy, and her caretaker Roslyn Henderson who provided her with excellent care and devotion during the final years of her life.
Peggy leaves a legacy of love and a belief that family and faith always come first.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Conroe High School Alumni Association Scholarship Fund PO Box 2017, Conroe 77305.
