Pearlie was born in Cuba, Alabama on August 4, 1931 as he 3 rd
child of James Curtis Knott and Rosa Mae (Bush) Knott. Her
sister, Rose Ella, died in infancy. Her older brother, John Henry,
and younger sister, Lillie Mae enjoyed life on their parents’ farm
raising various vegetables and farm animals. She recalled that
they were given chores at an early age which gave them a strong
work ethic to take them through life. The family worshiped at
Mt. Zion Church in Cuba, Alabama.
Following the death of her father, her mother remarried to T.H.
Portis and moved to New Jersey with Pearlie, Lillie and adopted
granddaughter, Gloria. They chose Mount Moriah Baptist
Church as their new church home to worship under the Rev. H.
M. Napier. Pearlie and her mother were members of the church
choir there or many years. She babysat the Reverend’s
grandson Joseph, Jr.
After high school, Pearlie obtained employment as a domestic
worker. She enrolled in Scott’s School of Beauty Culture in
Newark, New Jersey and worked as a beautician on weekends
while working full-time as a seamstress. From there, she
obtained employment with manufacturing companies which
were plentiful in the 50’s through the 70’s and also sold Avon
cosmetics door-to-door. She was determined do what she could
to provide for her daughter Lessie and son Mack.
Pearlie married Frank Rogers in 1972 and relocated from Passaic
to East Orange, New Jersey where she lived at the time of her
passing. She was proceeded in death by her parents, siblings
and son. She is survived by daughter Lessie Williams of East
Orange, NJ, Grandsons Shadrack Williams (Natasha Williams)
and Tremayne Williams of East Orange, NJ; God-daughter Renae
Portis of Passaic, NJ; God-Granddaughter Nicole Shuler (James
Shuler) of Nazareth, PA; Great Grandchildren Olamide Williams,
Jordan Williams, Tasmir and Taylah Gregorie, A’Lilly Milan
Williams; step son Frank Rogers, Jr. of Inglewood, CA; beloved
friends and caregivers Louise Wilder and Zerena Smalls of
Montclair, NJ, and a host of relatives and friends. Pearlie was
praying for Jesus to take her home and on the afternoon of June
7, Jesus answered her call.
