Pauline "Shine" Updike made her goal of 100 years of age on September 22, 2021. She then passed away shortly after on Tuesday, October 19, 2021 in Vincennes, IN at Bridgepointe Health Campus. She was born to Marshal and Clara (Rossa) Patterson in Petty Township.
Pauline attended Bethany Grade School and graduated from BTHS in 1940. On June 26, 1943, she married her high school classmate, Estel "Red" Updike. He then preceded her in death on November 23, 1984.
Pauline and Estel owned and operated the Updike Grocery Store for 13 years. Later, she went to work at Lawrenceville Sales, then as secretary for Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce for 17 1/2 years, and was camp secretary for Modern Woodsmen Insurance for 29 years.
Pauline attended the Island Free Methodist Church as a young girl and later attended the Lawrenceville Free Methodist Church and Pinkstaff Methodist Church. Pauline was active as a member and President of the former Lawrence County AARP Chapter and secretary for Lawrence County Home Extension. Pauline enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren immensely. She also enjoyed gardening and sewing.
Pauline was preceded in death by: parents- Marshal and Clara Patterson: husband- Estel "Red" Updike: two sons- Richard "Butch" Updike and Terry Updike: an infant daughter- Estella Jean Updike: brothers and sisters- Eldon Patterson, Violet "Dode" Stoltz, Charles "Jake" Patterson, Glen "Bud" Patterson and Velma "Toots" Akers: daughter-in-law- Lorraine Updike Ward: and sister-in-law- Doris Patterson.
Surviving family includes: three grandchildren- James Updike of Fort Myers, FL, Shannon Reisner and husband Kelly of Mooresville, IN and Derek Updike and wife Krystle of Flat Rock, IL: two great- grandchildren- Rorie and Zoey Reisner: and daughter- in-law- Brenda Updike. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, and good friends.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, October 27, 2021 at the Cunningham-Young Funeral Home in Lawrenceville. Burial took place at Crest Haven Memorial Park Cemetery.
