Pauline Payne "Polly" Eyler, a resident of Frostburg, died on October 16, 2022, at Peace Healthcare at Mountain City Center.
She was born in 1922, in Elkins, WV. Polly was the wife of the late Walter Stanley Eyler, and the daughter of the late Marion Ross Payne and Nellie White Payne of Elkins, WV.
Polly graduated from Elkins High School in 1940, and Davis and Elkins College in 1944. She later earned her Master's Equivalence Certificate from Frostburg State College. Polly taught in the following schools in Allegany County, MD: Fort Hill High School, Allegany High School, Beall High School, and Braddock Junior High School. She retired from teaching in 1981.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Highlanders, Allegany County Retired Teachers Association, the Historical Society, the Women's Civic Club, and the Cumberland Country Club. Over the years, Polly enjoyed playing bridge, golfing, traveling, working in her flower garden, and visits with family.
Polly is survived by her daughter, Diane (and Eric) Hardee, two granddaughters, Sarah (and Michael) and Caitlin, two great-grandchildren, Samuel and Liliana, several nieces and nephews, and some longtime friends. She continued to make new friends as long as she lived. She will be dearly missed.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter S. Eyler, of Cumberland, her son, Gregg S. Eyler, of Baltimore, three sisters; Dorothy P. Burris of Cocoa, FL, Ethel P. McDaniel of Waco, TX, and Ruth Cunningham of Westbury, NY, and two brothers; Carl W. Payne of Elkins, WV, and Cecil A. Payne of Kingwood, TX.
Family and friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, on Tuesday, October 25, 2022, from 5:00-7:00pm.
A memorial service will begin at 12:15pm on Thursday, October 27, 2022, at the First Presbyterian Church, 11 Baltimore Street, Cumberland, MD, followed by light refreshments.
Committal and graveside services will be conducted at Maplewood Cemetery, Elkins, WV, on Friday, October 28, 2022.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, the First Presbyterian Church of Cumberland, MD, or a charity of your choice.
