Patsy (Patti) Louise Wofford Hood passed away peacefully in Houston, Texas on March 16, 2022 at the age of 89 years.
Patti was born on March 2, 1933 in Cleburne, Texas to Curtis Noel Wofford and Lovie Evans Wofford. She grew up in Ft. Worth and Cleburne and graduated from Cleburne High School. She was voted Most Beautiful in her class every year.
Some people have always known what they want to do in life, and Patti always wanted to be a nurse. After graduating from nursing school in Ft. Worth, Patti's plan was to move to Corpus Christi and live near the beach. But instead she accepted a job offer "for just one year" at Sweetwater Memorial Hospital. There she met and fell in love with Francis T.N. Hood, Jr., M.D. They were married and lived in Sweetwater for the next 28 years.
Patti loved her family. In 1956 she and Francis welcomed their son Jack, and in 1960 their daughter Jill. She put her nursing career up on the shelf while she raised her children, as was the custom of the time, but she loved taking care of her family.
Patti loved to entertain and often hosted dinner parties, cocktail parties and legendary pool parties. She explained, "In a small town you have to make your own fun," and there was indeed something fun going on almost every weekend. She had a wide circle of girlfriends and made the effort to keep up with them and their families over the years.
In Sweetwater Patti was a member and active volunteer of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, member of the Sweetwater Country Club, active with fundraising for the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society, women's club, cub scouts den leader, and bridge club member. She worked as an RN in Francis' office a few weeks every summer and volunteered as an extra school nurse when needed.
After Francis retired due to health reasons in 1978, the empty nesters moved to Ft. Lauderdale and lived aboard a boat for three years, then moved to Francis' hometown of Plano, Texas in 1982. Patti loved their new home in Plano and welcomed the opportunity to finally resume her nursing career.
Patti was delighted to welcome her first grandchild and only granddaughter Veronica in 1983 and first grandson Nick in 1985. She loved going to Midland to visit them and play with them, and "Mom Patti" was always ready to babysit whenever the Hoods came to Dallas.
After Francis passed away in 1987, Jill and Chris moved to Plano and then her sister Dotti moved to Plano too so Patti's family, once so spread out, was now much closer. And in 1990 another grandson Preston was born in Dallas, another source of joy.
Later two more grandsons were born, Woody in 1993 and Sam in 1995, both in Houston. Patti said she spent the 1990s driving up and down I-45, visiting her grandsons in Houston. The boys always enjoyed having "Honey" come to play.
Besides visiting her grandchildren, traveling with friends was Patti's great pleasure during these years. She visited many countries in Europe and went on several wonderful cruises. She was an active member of Christ Episcopal Church in Plano, and later Trinity Episcopal Church in The Woodlands.
In 2004 Patti decided to retire from working and move to Spring, Texas to be near her grandsons. She was also thrilled to live closer to longtime friends from Sweetwater Lucy Byrd and Charlene Perkins. She rarely missed a band concert, swim meet, or Boy Scout Court of Honor, and the boys loved having Honey cheering for them. She was so excited for them when they went off to college and loved hearing every detail of what they were doing. She always had one of her amazing chocolate cakes timed to come hot out of the oven whenever they came home.
Patti moved to a memory care facility in Houston in 2016. Always a nurse, she was pretty convinced she worked there. She would help push the residents in wheelchairs or do other things to help out. Even as her illness progressed, she always liked to be around other people and always smiled at anyone who would talk with her.
She loved God. She loved her family. She loved being a nurse. She loved baking, traveling, entertaining. She loved her friends. She was greatly loved and she will be greatly missed. She is whole again, happy and with God, and for that we are thankful.
