Patrick John Magrady passed away on December 8, 2021. He was born on April, 1949 in Chicago, IL. He is survived by his wife, Jane Conklin Magrady, three brothers, Michael, Joseph and Robert and one special sister, Maureen, who has been residing with he and his wife in the winter months for about 10 years. He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Margaret Magrady.
Raised in Chicago and Oak Park, IL, he attended Fenwick High and Oak Park and graduated in 1967. Patrick went on to Loyola University and University of Illinois, Chicago Circle Campus, graduating in 1976 with a B. A. degree in Plastic and Graphic Arts.
Pat's father, "Jack," called him "Downey," as the family hailed from Downpatrick, Ireland. Pat and Jane toured Ireland, where he felt right at home, in April 2009 for his 60th birthday. It was the proverbial trip of a lifetime. In true Irish tradition, Patrick was full of life, laughter and a wonderful storyteller.
Pat had a distinguished career in the insurance industry in Chicago for many years, where he met Jane. Ultimately, he started his own business, Alternative Benefits Concepts, which sold excess health insurance coverage to employer plans. When Jane's job at AAA transferred to Orlando, Pat was more than happy to pick up his business (and his boat) and move south.
He joined a local fishing club, CFOA, making some good friends with similar interests. Pat, aka Captain Pat or Mr. Pat, also loved to fish in Alaska and Canada at God's Lake and Bolton Lake Lodge. Although COVID put these travel activities on hold, he still enjoyed the local fishing and boating activities. After retirement, the couple moved their home to a waterfront lot with a dock on the Intercoastal Waterway.
Pat and Jane loved to travel, with Pat being the official travel photographer, resulting in nine cherished memory books of their trips. When at home, Pat was the grill-master and worked on perfecting his rib recipes for his friends.
In February, 2022, the family will have a private service through Dignity at Sea which will take his cremains out Ponce Inlet into the ocean he loved so much. Those who wish to remember Pat in a special way may make donations in his memory to the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org. Baldwin Brothers New Smyrna Beach is handling arrangements.
