Patricia White Hartley, 76, of Columbia, died Saturday, December 19, 2020. Born in New Orleans, she was a daughter of the late Dr. Charles Herman White, Sr. and Frances Waters White.
She was a graduate of Edmunds High School in Sumter and went on to earn bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of South Carolina. This led her to a career as a librarian, including for USAID while living overseas in the Ivory Coast and Zambia, and then in elementary and high schools in Berkeley County. After retiring, she served as a docent at Middleton Place in Charleston. She was a member of Old St. Andrew's Parish Church in Charleston and helped research connections between Old St. Andrew's and Middleton Place for a book on the church's history, published in 2014.
She is survived by her children, Lucile Hartley Cohen and Charles Edward Hartley, and a grandson, Thomas Edward Cohen, all of Columbia; brothers, Dr. Charles H. White, Jr. and his wife, Mary Brown White, and Francis Calhoun "Scooter" White, and his wife, Elizabeth "Beth" White, all of Sumter. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Carole White Begley.
A graveside service will be held at two o'clock, Tuesday, December 22nd, at Sumter Cemetery, 700 W. Oakland Ave., Sumter.
