South Bend, IN-Pamela Margarete Elizabeth Florey, 89, formally of Oxford, England, died peacefully at home among family members on Tuesday, February 9, 2021. Pamela was born on November 13, 1931, to the late Percy & Margaret (Parrington) Soanes in Cowley, Oxfordshire, England. She was the granddaughter of Susan Walton Peacock of Tan Hill Inn, North Yorkshire.
On February 10, 1951, at Saint James Church Oxford, she married her husband of 62 years, Ronald R.A. Florey who preceded her in death on May 26, 2013. She was a resident of South Bend since 1967 when the family immigrated to the U.S. on the Queen Elizabeth I and arrived in South Bend during the blizzard of 1967.
Pamela is survived by her three daughters, Diana Florey-Hitchcox (Patrick) of Oxford, England, Marilyn J. Florey-Krucina (Gary) of South Bend, and Dawn A. Cowen (Douglas) of South Bend; her three cherished grandchildren, Benjamin M. M. Krucina (Jessica) of Seattle, WA, Claire D. Florey-Hitchcox of Oxford, England and Stuart D. Cowen of South Bend; her sister, Susan Costar of Wheatley, England; her brother, Michael Soanes of Carmarthenshire, Wales; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins residing in England. Preceding her in death were her parents, Margaret & Percy Soanes; sister, Wendy Ann Soanes; and brothers-in-law, Leonard Florey and Cyril Costar.
Pamela was a member of the First United Methodist Church, South Bend. She was a member of the Michiana Peace and Justice Coalition and an active member of the South Bend Democratic Club. Growing up in England during WWII, Pamela and Ron witnessed first-hand the devastation of war, thus they became actively involved in promoting peace.
Pam and Ron love antiques and ran a small antique business, participating in many regional antique fairs. For over 30 years, they had a seasonal antique booth at the South Bend Farmers Market where they enjoyed talking with their many friends.
Pam and Ron loved to travel. They returned to England to visit family annually and traveled across northern Europe staying in youth hostels. They also enjoyed touring the U.S. and traveled by car to California and up to Vancouver, Canada camping in a small army tent. As sports enthusiasts, they also traveled to the Olympics in Atlanta and London.
Pam was an avid gardener. In 1989, their garden was selected for the Women's Art League Annual Garden Walk. In 2007, they received the "Glorious George Award" from the City of South Bend Historic Preservation Committee for their home and garden.
Pam adored her grandchildren-Ben, Claire and Stuart. Whether it was watching Ben or Stuart play soccer, listening to Stuart's band or attending Claire's art exhibits, she was their #1 fan. She was so proud of them and they filled her life with love and joy.
The family would like to thank Pam's caregivers, Lynn, Maureen and her neighbor, Pam. They provided competent, compassionate care and friendship. The family also extends their gratitude to Dr. Rashid Kahn.
Due to Covid 19 restrictions, a private family service will be held and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
Memorial donations in Pam's memory may be made to the First United Methodist Church of South Bend, 333 N. Main St. South Bend, IN 46601.
