He moved with family to Dubois, Idaho where he graduated from high school in 1985. Jerry began riding saddle broncs at a young age, winning many awards. In 1991, he won the championship title in the IMPRA. He also worked in a fish cannery in Alaska and worked in Kauai as a carpenter and then later as a core driller, also in the Hawaiian islands.
