Born in Paterson, he lived for many years in Pompton Lakes before moving to Manchester 16 years ago. Tom was born in Dade City, Florida on July 21, 1924 to Thomas R. Demery and Helen Mar Bushnell. He spent his childhood in various towns in Florida, but his most memorable early years were spent in Keystone Heights.
