Tom was born in Dade City, Florida on July 21, 1924 to Thomas R. Demery and Helen Mar Bushnell. He spent his childhood in various towns in Florida, but his most memorable early years were spent in Keystone Heights. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in September 1942 and served in World War Two as a radio operator on a B-17, flying 35 missions over Germany. He received the Air Medal with five oak leaf clusters.
