Otto Warkentin, 90, formerly of Ft. Wayne, died peacefully Monday, May 9, 2022, at Greencroft with his family at his side.
He was born March 27, 1932, in Laird, Saskatchewan, Canada to Cornelius H. and Pauline (Wurfel) Warkentin. He married Louetta Mae Nofziger on June 20, 1953, in Archbold, Ohio. She survives along with four children; Byron (Connie)Warkentin of Elkhart; Jon (Bettina) Warkentin of Nashville, Tennessee; Karlin (Joanne) Warkentin of Bradenton, Florida; and Andrea Strycker of South Bend; two brothers, David (Pam) Warkentin of Ottawa, Ontario; and Rudy (Donna) Warkentin of Port Elgin, Ontario; a sister-in-law, Kathy Warkentin of Lion's Head, Ontario; and a brother-in-law, Paul Hershberger of Goshen. He took special pride and delight in each of his 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Along with his parents, Mr. Warkentin was preceded in death by a sister, Elvira Hershberger; a brother, Henry Warkentin; and a son-in-law, David Strycker.
Mr. Warkentin obtained a bachelor's degree from Goshen College and a master's degree from the University of St. Francis. He was a licensed public school music teacher for kindergarten through grade 12 where he introduced innumerable students to the joy of music and playing an instrument. Playing cello, church hymnody, sailing, woodworking, and backyard birds were among his favorite pastimes.
Visitation will take place Saturday, May 28, 2022, from 9 a.m. (EST) until the 11 a.m. (EST) Celebration of Life service at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home. Greencroft Chaplain Laura Moshier will officiate. The service will be live-streamed through the funeral home website, www.yoderculpfuneralhome.com.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Mennonite Central Committee-Ukraine Emergency Response or Goshen Health Home Care and Hospice.
