Oscar Alaniz Palacios, 75, residing in San Juan, Texas, died at home after a long battle with cancer, surrounded by his wife, children, grandchildren, his extended family and his fur babies Apollo and Colt.
Oscar was born and grew up in Pharr, Texas, graduating from PSJA High School. He was a proud Longhorn, graduating from the University of Texas at Austin with an undergraduate degree in Political Science in 1969 and the University of Texas School of Law, receiving his Doctor of Jurisprudence degree in 1971. Oscar inspired generations in his family as a lifelong Longhorn fan and a Texas Ex. Oscar began his law career in 1972 with the F.B. Godinez law firm in Lubbock, Texas. He then founded his own law firm on January 1, 1974 in Pharr, Texas practicing law for 48 years.
Lawyers master language to advocate for their clients. What made Oscar exceptional was his deeds, not just his words - he became a lawyer for the best reasons - a belief in justice for all. True to his humble roots, Oscar put principles before pay. He believed justice should not be determined by what you can afford. Oscar put those words into action as a respected servant leader in his community - whether with clients, family or friends, Oscar helped those in need, when no one was looking. To quote Don Quixote: "The man who fights for his ideals is the man who is alive." And in his time with us, Oscar embodied a life well lived.
