Gone but never to be forgotten. Oscar Thomas Harrell, Jr. 91 of Desoto, Georgia passed on to be with his Heavenly Father on Monday 12/19/2022. Born 06/30/1931 to Oscar Thomas Harrell, Sr. and Eula Forrest Harrell in Plains, Georgia and lived on his farm in Desoto since age 6. Mr. Harrell had many names: The BBQ Man, Papa Thomas, Mr. Thomas and just plain Thomas. He was known all over South Georgia for his delicious BBQ, Brunswick Stew and his catering services. He farmed peanuts, corn and raised hogs for many years before primarily running his BBQ and catering business. He attended school in Leslie, Georgia and graduated from Leslie High School playing on its basketball team. Thomas was known for his kindness and generosity as well as his dry sense of humor and knowledge of farming.
Thomas never officially married but had lifelong dedication and commitment to Hazel Carr Granger and her children and grandchildren. He frequently voiced that the best day of his life was meeting Hazel and her family. He was an excellent father figure and grandpa. He will be very missed by many, many family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Eula V. Hill, his nephew Bob Hill and his life long love Hazel Carr Granger.
He is survived by his adopted children Denise Granger Echeveste of Leesburg, Georgia and Elaine Granger Edwards of Ormond Beach, Florida. His adopted grandchildren Dawn & David Howard of Daphne, Alabama and their daughter Lydia, Amy Davis Hobbs & Benjamin of Cornelia, Georgia and Leah Cohen of Riverview, Florida and her Sons Reynaldo, Mikey, and Ramon. He is also survived by his lifelong friend Mac Perry of Leslie, Georgia and his dedicated Caregiver Gail Jones of Cobb, Georgia.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday December 21, 2022 from 6pm-7pm at Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel. A graveside service will be held at Desoto Methodist Church in Desoto, GA on Thursday December 22, 2022 at 1pm with Chaplin Mike Truitt officiating.
