Ona M. Major, 91, of South Bend, IN, passed away at 11:00 p.m. Thursday, March 4, 2021 at North Woods Village in Mishawaka, IN, following an illness.
She was born on March 27, 1929 to the late David and Madge (Clancy) McMahon in Askeaton, Co. Limerick, Ireland, and has lived in South Bend, IN since 1951, when she immigrated from Ireland.
On August 20, 1958, as Ona M. McMahon, she married Casimer "C.J." Major in the chapel at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. C.J. passed away on October 16, 1981.
Ona is survived by her daughter, Colleen (Michael) Kendzicky of Granger, IN; five sons, Fred Major of Greenfield, IN; Casey (Donna) Major of South Bend, IN; Greg (Kathy) Major of Locust Grove, VA; Sean (Elizabeth) Major of Hartland, WI; Brian (Christine) Major of Wilmette, IL; 18 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; one brother, David McMahon of Askeaton, Co. Limerick, Ireland; and a beloved niece, Breda O'Connor of Chicago, IL.
Ona was a devout member of Corpus Christi Parish, where she was a founding member of the Holy Hour Program. She was a longtime volunteer for The Center for Hospice Care. Ona was an extraordinary caregiver to her husband C.J. for over 20 years; a devoted mother; and a beloved Nana to her grandchildren. Ona's life of profound faith, fierce loyalty, Irish wit and warm hospitality included friends of all ages and interests. A pot of tea and a delighted welcome greeted all who entered her home. She will be greatly missed.
Visitation will be from 9-10:30 a.m. Monday, March 8, 2021 at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN.
A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 8, 2021 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, with Rev. Daryl Rybicki officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery.
