Mrs. Ollie Hodge Poe, age 92, of Kathleen, GA, formerly of Rome, passed away Wednesday, April 28, 2021, at her residence.
Mrs. Poe was born in Gainesville, FL on January 30, 1929, daughter of the late Peter Garfield Hodge and the late Cordia Missouri Thomas Hodge. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Thomas Eugene "Tom" Poe, by 4 sisters, Lizzie Cook, Madalyn Jones, Gloria Don Fowler, and Arabelle Francis, and by 2 brothers, Getzin and Ottis Hodge.
Mrs. Poe was a graduate of Newberry High School in Newberry, FL, and a 1951 graduate of Berry College. A career educator, she taught at Rabun Gap School, Johnson School, Central Primary, and at Midway School, where she retired following over 30 years in education. She, with her husband, made history in 2012 when Berry College honored them as the first couple to receive the "Charter Fellows Award for Outstanding Service to the Profession of Teaching." Mrs. Poe was also active with her husband in the Carpenters for Christ program. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Lindale where she was active in the W. M. U., in other mission's activities, and was a member of the Syble Kilgo Sunday School Class. While in Kathleen, she attended Peachtree Baptist Church in Byron, GA.
Survivors include her daughter, Sheila Poe Love (Bob), Kathleen; 3 grandchildren, Bowen Love (Anna), Orlando, FL, Stephen Love, Kathleen, and Blake Love (Rebecca), Kennesaw; 6 great grandchildren, Brody Love, Everly Love, Jace Love, Genevieve Love, Beckett Love, and Baylor Love; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 3, 2021, at 1pm at the graveside in Floyd Memory Gardens. The Rev. Jim Cook will officiate.
The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, on Monday from 11am until 12:30pm. Social distancing guidelines will be followed.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to First Baptist Church of Lindale, P. O. Box 26, Lindale, GA 30147 and designate for missions.
