Oleta "Lucy" Louise Britt McMillan slipped away into God's arms on 1 July 2022, peacefully in her home.
Oleta was born 1 February, 1924 in Dublin, North Carolina to Wilbur Nash and Louise Smith Britt. Lucy had a varied life, picking tobacco and cotton in North Carolina as a child; working with the military during WWII, where she met her husband of 54 years, Robert "Mac" McMillan Jr.; and raising a loving and loved family.
Lucy had a 30+ year career with the Hampton City Schools library processing department. She was known through her neighborhood for her nightly bike rides, chaperoned every scout event and band trip she could manage for her children and grandchildren, and greatly enjoyed her almost 30 years with the Tidal Waves Square Dance Club.
Oleta was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Mac, sisters Lucille Andrews and Mabel Britt, and brother Hilton Britt. She was devoted to her brother James Albert Britt who survives her. Lucy is survived and missed by her children Lisa Kelly (Brian), Bob McMillan (Charl), Britt McMillan (Velja), and Beth Watson (Tom); grandchildren Ian, Brian, Bobby, Ellie, Aaron, Sarai, Katie, and Rachel; and 8 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to express appreciation to the many special people who were part of Lucy's life and care in her latter days. These include her "adopted daughters" Dorsthea Knight and Lois Smith, the other wonderful ladies who cared for mom in her home?Mila, Georgia, Cherri, Diane, Juliana, Rhonda, and Vanessa; Dr. Debra Boyer; and Sherri and the staff of Sentara Home Hospice?all of whom greatly improved her quality of life.
Visitation will be held at R Hayden Smith Funeral Home on 9 July at 2pm, with services at 3pm. Donations to the charity of your choice are encouraged in lieu of flowers.
