Funeral for Odell Gunter,Sr, 86, Lawton, will be at 11 a.m. Monday January 20 at Union Baptist
Church, Lawton, with Dr. Willie J. Tiller, pastor, officiating. Mr. Gunter passed away on Monday January 6, 2025, at a local hospital. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery under the direction of Howard- Harris
Funeral Services, Lawton. Odell Gunter Sr., respected educator and community leader, died January 6, 2025, at 86. Born June 11, 1938, in Anadarko, he graduated from Douglass High (1957) and Langston University (1962). He married Polly Gunter(Piggee) in 1962 (d. 2003). A U.S. Army veteran(Vietnam), Mr.Gunter taught in Arkansas before returning to Lawton, where he taught and coached at Tomlinson Junior High School, transitioning to administration at MacArthur High School, Central and MacArthur Junior Highs. He later led the Great Plains Improvement Foundation. Mr. Gunter received numerous awards for his community service and was active in many organizations, including Kappa Alpha Psi and the NAACP. He is survived by his children, Brenda and Odell Jr. (Katrina); sister, Shirley (Rudolph) Reed; step-sister, Lameter Bivins; grandsons, Quinton(Alexis) and Dameko(Veronica); granddaughter, Sydney; six great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Polly, his parents, and a step-sister. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and countless lives he touched through his dedication to education, community service, and leadership.
