Norman J. Toppen, of Mesick passed away on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, at his son's home in Mesick. During his last hours he was surrounded by loved ones who had been caring for him during this difficult time. He had just turned 87 years old the week prior. Norm was born on September 24, 1937, to John Toppen and Gertrude Toppen (Star) in Pierre, South Dakota. On April 3, 1958, he entered into marriage with the former Joan Mae Wright, after their marriage they lived in Grandville and in Jamestown before moving to Mesick in 1988; Where Norm stayed throughout his wife's passing in June of 2003 and remained there until the last weeks of his life. Norm had many occupations throughout his time, but most enjoyed having his own mechanic business. He had a love for mechanics and continued them as hobbies till the very end. Norm most enjoyed surrounding himself with his family while watching his kids, grandkids, and even great grandkids grow up to be the amazing people he always wished for them to become. Norm is survived by his sisters Lenora Berens and Linda Vankampen, his children Michael (Donna) Toppen, Robert (Catherine) Toppen, and Kathy (Jamie) Nefsey, his grandchildren Michelle (Greg) Stehouwer, Kevin Toppen, Scott (Heather) Toppen, Rebecca (Ryan) Fogle, Rachel Toppen, Elijah Toppen, Zebulon Toppen, Deborah Corliss, Jaella (Luke) Morse, Duane (Ashley) Cheyne, Cheri Cheyne, Sandra (Fred) McCormick, Jessi Toppen, Gabriel Nefsey, and Benjamin Nefsey, and 20 great-grandchildren/step great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Toppen and Gertrude Toppen; his wife, Joan Mae Toppen (Wright); his sister and brother, Laura Pastoor and Robert Toppen; his daughter, Mary Cheyne-Bastian; his grandson Joseph Nefsey, and grandson in-law Daniel Corliss. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2024, beginning at 11 a.m. at the Sherman-Mesick cemetery with a time of food and fellowship to follow at the Colfax Community Church in Manton. Officiating will be Pastor Ben Pike. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Colfax Community Church. Arrangements by Jowett Family Funeral Home of Benzonia.
