Norman William Nightingale of Frostburg, Maryland died December 31, 2021 at the age of 87. He was surrounded by his family at the time of his death.
He was born March 2, 1934, in Lonaconing, Maryland to the late William W. Nightingale and Alice (Johnson) Nightingale.
Norman graduated from Central High School in Lonaconing, Maryland in 1951. He spent two years working at the B&O Railroad prior to enlisting in the United States Army during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge from the Army, he spent nine years in the Maryland Army Reserve Signal Corps.
He received his Bachelor of Science and M. ED degrees from Frostburg State College (now University) in 1960 and 1965 respectively. He obtained his doctorate degree in Administration and Supervision from the University of Maryland in 1978.
Dr. Nightingale's professional experiences included teaching at Cresaptown Junior High School, Cresaptown, Maryland, for several years. Following tenure there, he joined the faculty at Frostburg State University as Coordinator of Secondary Field Experiences and continued in that capacity until retiring in 1997 as Professor of Educational Professions.
In addition to his responsibilities at FSU, Dr. Nightingale developed the Frostburg State University - Garrett County Teacher Education Center. He presented numerous programs for the National Association of Teacher Educators. He was a member of the Maryland Association of Teacher Educators, Maryland State Teachers Association, National Education Association, Maryland Association of Curriculum Development, Phi Delta Kappa, FSU Alumni Association, the American Legion Post 13, Cumberland, Maryland and the Allegany County Retired School Personnel. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, LaVale, Maryland.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Juanita Margaret Nightingale (McClintock). He is survived by his sons Mark and wife, Tina, of Frostburg, Maryland and Brian and wife, Patricia, of Bluffton, South Carolina. Also surviving are granddaughters Sarah Nightingale of Union Bridge, Maryland, Kelsey Gulledge and son-in-law Garrett Gulledge of Millsboro, Delaware, and Hannah Nightingale of Nashville, Tennessee; grandsons Patrick Nightingale of Reston, Virginia, and Tyler Nightingale of Atlanta, Georgia; and great grandson Cameron Gulledge.
