Norman Herbert Dahlstedt passed away peacefully at home, in the loving care of his family, on February 9, 2023 at the age of 92.
Norman was born on April 28, 1930 and raised by his parents Edwin and Olga Dahlstedt in Burlington, WA. He spent his early years working hard on the family farm and pursuing his passion for agriculture through 4-H, where he met the great love of his life Patricia Ball in 1946 when they were just 15. They married on November 4, 1950 and together with their three children Gary, Ken and Barbara, carried on a multigenerational legacy of farming and land stewardship in the Skagit Valley.
A man of deep faith, Norm dedicated his life to being in service to The Lord and providing for his family. Nothing gave him more joy than to see his loved ones thriving and enjoying life. He and Pat were committed fans and cheerleaders of their 3 kids, 10 grandkids and 14 great-grandkids, watching countless sporting events and performances over the years and cheering with great pride. He was also dedicated to serving his community through various leadership and philanthropic activities including serving as a founding member of the Board of Trustees for Skagit Valley College, one of his proudest honors. He was regarded by his friends as a man of his word, a hard worker, generous, good-humored, fair to everyone regardless of circumstance, a truly great man.
Norm enjoyed simple pleasures like a bologna sandwich, a bowl of vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup, the sunset over the fields behind his house, his family gathered around the dinner table. He always waited to serve himself until everyone else was served, and he always had room for ice cream - "it just fills in the cracks." It meant everything to him to know that his family was taken care of, and it meant everything to his family to be able to take care of him so fully in the final stage of his life.
Norm was preceded in death by his parents, numerous aunts and uncles and dear friends, and his grandson Brian Hernandez.
He is survived by his beloved wife Pat; his children Gary and wife Kate, Ken and wife Flo, and Barbara Dahlstedt; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren Tracy Dahlstedt (Zelka), Tricia and Casey Eason (Tess and Ellie), Drew and Melissa Dahlstedt (Payton and Ivy), Jaime and Scotty Templeton (Ray and Amaya), Justin Dahlstedt, Stephanie and Gerritt Wideman (Gavin and Lexi), Kevin Dahlstedt (Kaiden), Rachel and Sean Matthews (Kauner, Kennedy, Kamryn), and Travis and Mikayla Hernandez (Dean). He leaves a deep legacy of service, generosity, gratitude and love, and he is deeply loved and missed.
A memorial service will be held at Salem Lutheran Church in Mount Vernon on Saturday, March 11 at 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family would greatly appreciate donations to the Brian Hernandez Memorial Scholarship Fund online or at P.O. Box 350, Burlington,WA 98233.
