How do you know Norma? Please share your stories and photos, and help spread the word about this page!
Norma June Swihart, formerly Shearer, reached her hand out for God, who guided her home on Sunday morning, May 22, 2022. She celebrated her 89th birthday just a couple of weeks ago on Mother's Day, May 8. She was born to the late Harvey and Hilda Shearer. She graduated from Bourbon High School in 1951 and later married Clifford Swihart.
She was a member of the Osceola Brethren Church in Osceola, Indiana. She worked for Kroger for almost 30 years in the Michiana-Elkhart area, retiring from the Kroger store in Goshen, Indiana, where she was highly regarded for the dishes she made for the deli. She was an amazing cook. Norma loved to grow a big garden and watch her shelves fill up at the end of the year with her hard work. She also loved to play cards – wizard, rummy, and euchre, and to crochet, cross stitch and quilt. She especially loved to go to Goodwill and hunt for bargains. She taught her children the meaning of the golden rules, working hard and taking care of family. She was a hard-headed, independent, strong and loving mother, which she passed down to her children. We already miss her deeply.
Norma leaves behind her children, Brad (Rita) Swihart of Mishawaka, Indiana; Rox Ann (William) Cochran of Elkhart, Indiana; and Tangi O'Mara of Osceola, Indiana. She also leaves behind her grandchildren: Hilary (Ben) Miller of Lawrenceville, Georgia, Ryon O'Mara of Omaha, Nebraska, Dr. Sean (Danielle) O'Mara of Pensacola, Florida, Dr. Travis (Lisa) Swihart of Mason, Michigan, and Jamie (Brendan) Moore of Omaha, Nebraska; and two great-grandchildren, Bridget Miller and Lincoln Miller, along with one more on the way. She has one sister, Lynn Metheny of Bothell, Washington, remaining out of the five children in the family.
Preceding Norma in death are her parents; her brothers and sisters: Ralph Shearer, Carol Cain and Edward Shearer; and her aunt, Verda Plummer; along with her granddaughter, Jill Hart.
The family invites friends to celebrate Norma's life during visitation services on Thursday, May 26, from 4 to 7 p.m. and again on Friday, May 27, from 10 to 11 a.m. held at Deaton-Clemens Funeral Home (115 S. Main St., Bourbon, IN 46504).
Funeral service will be held on Friday, May 27, at 11 a.m. in Deaton-Clemens Funeral Home (115 S. Main St., Bourbon, IN 46504) with Pastor Kenneth Cooke presiding.
Norma will be buried in Sandridge Cemetery with her parents.
The family would like to thank Norma's younger daughter, Tangi, for moving in and taking good care of her the last three to four years. Those last few years were especially hard. They would also like to thank Elkhart General Hospital, Greenleaf Health Care Facility and Heartland Hospice for taking wonderful care of Norma.
Thank you to all our friends and community for your support during this difficult time.
Deaton-Clemens Funeral Home is honored to be caring for the Swihart family and wishes to express our deepest condolences to them.
