Nicholas J. Weber, 89, passed away November 21, 2020 peacefully at home from natural causes surrounded by his family. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Friday, November 27 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Mitchell. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Mitchell. A rosary will be at 10:00 AM before the Mass of Christian Burial. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.
Nicholas was born on July 20, 1931 to Nicholas and Leona (Thelen) Weber on the family farm near Parkston, SD. He attended grade school in Dimock and Parkston, then Parkston High School. Nick joined the Army on April 5, 1951, transferred to reserves on April 5, 1953 with honorable discharge on February 18, 1957.
On June 1, 1954, Nick was united in marriage with Mary Ellen Volmer at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Emery, SD. They made their home in Mitchell until 1959 when they moved to Chamberlain where Nick started the machine shop for United Auto Parts. Nick became manager in 1969 for the next 26 years. In 1986 they moved to Watertown and opened Weber's CarQuest Auto Parts on August 1, 1986 with his son Ron. Nick retired in 1996 when Ron took over the business.
Nick was active throughout the years with the Knights of Columbus after joining on March 1, 1957. He held various offices within the councils including past grand knight and district deputy for District 6. He started the District 6 degree team and was state youth director for three years from 1976 - 1978. He also started the state free throw contests. He became a 4th degree knight in 1982. He was honored with the Knights of Columbus Family of the year in 1997.
Nick was active in his parishes helping with CCD, Eucharistic Minister and Usher. Nick was a past Boy Scout Master, a member of the American Legion for over 50 years along with various volunteer work while in Watertown. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and woodworking as well as spending time with family and friends.
The weeks leading up to Nick's death, he said that he was at peace with the Lord.
He is survived by his wife Mary Ellen, Mitchell; 5 children: Joann (Dick) Ellis, Elk Grove Village, IL; Ronald (Evie) Weber, Pukwana, SD; Karen (Terry) Olson, Gilbert, AZ; Janet (Glenn) Nichols, Geneva, IN; Mark (Rhonda) Weber, Mesa, AZ; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Devona Nolz, Mitchell, Celesta "Sally" (Alfred) Hohn, Mitchell and 1 sister-in-law, Esther Weber, Parkston, SD.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 4 brothers (one in infancy), 6 sisters, daughter Mary Kay Weber and grandson Caleb Weber.
