Nicholas J. Lombard, Jr.February 4, 1927 - May 11, 2022DEVOTED HUSBAND, FATHER, VETERAN AND MENTORNicholas J. Lombard, Jr. "Nick," age 95, passed away peacefully and entered the gates of heaven surrounded by his family on Wednesday, May 11, 2022 at Masonicare in Wallingford.Nick was born in Waterbury on February 4, 1927, the son of the late Nicola "Nicholas" Lombard, Sr. and Clotilda (DeVito) Lombard and was a longtime resident of Prospect, Milford and Florida.As a young man, Nick enjoyed tap dancing and playing the violin with his younger brother Louis to the delight of family and friends, and performed locally in the Waterbury area and on the radio.Nicknamed "Kelly" by his teammates, Nick was an All-City stand out quarterback in football and short stop in baseball at Wilby High School from where he graduated in 1945. Always the entrepreneur, Nick operated a family bowling alley on North Main Street in Waterbury, where one of his "pin boys" in the days before automatic pin setters was a young Nick "Apollo" Forte.He later earned an Associate's degree from Post Junior College in Waterbury and worked for over 40 years at Lombard Bros. Trucking Company where he was vice-president and a co-owner. Nick worked countless hours to help fundraise for St. Anthony's Church in Prospect where he was a faithful communicant of the parish. Nick proudly served his country as a member of the United States Coast Guard during WWII and was honorably discharged in 1946.In addition to being a devoted husband to his wife of 65 years, Angela (Masotta) Lombard who predeceased him, he was a loving and generous father to his children, Ronald J. Lombard of Milford and Nancy Lombard Berger of Naples, FL and West Haven. Nick was a kind and compassionate mentor to his many friends and associates and was loved and admired by all who knew him. Nick loved sailing on Long Island Sound while spending the summer months at his beach house located on Bayview Beach in Milford, where he selflessly taught many of the neighborhood children to sail and water ski on his sail and power boats. He also loved dancing and often did so with Angela and Nancy to their everlasting delight, and is undoubtedly dancing with Angela, the love of his life, in heaven.Prior to his retirement Nick was a longtime member of the Waterbury YMCA Men's Health Club, where he worked out most weekdays and made many lasting friendships while helping to fundraise for the organization, never seeking the limelight nor attribution for this effort nor for his other numerous charitable endeavors.After his retirement Nick spent many winters in Boca Raton and Marco Island, Florida enjoying his family and his hobbies and pursuits. He was also an avid sports fan, loved watching and playing golf and watching figure skating. During this period in his life Nick enjoyed exercising every day, jogging, jumping rope and walking both in the Bayview community, and in Florida.In addition to his children, Nick is survived by Ronald's fiancée Ana Tamayo, her son Ayden Tamayo and Nancy's husband Attorney Mitchell Berger. He also leaves his sisters-in-law Genevieve (Masotta) Lombard of Milford, Amelia Masotta of Waterbury, and Marion Lombard of Prospect as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides his loving wife, Angela, Nick was predeceased by his brothers, Anthony, Joseph, Frank and Louis Lombard and his sisters Angela Dorso and Christine Mecca in addition to his brothers-in-law John, Joe and Vincent Masotta, Jr.Nick's funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, June 13, 2022 at 11:00am at Saint Anthony's Church, 4 Union City Road in Prospect, Connecticut. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Family and friends are asked to meet directly at the church. In Iieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Nicholas' name may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. Maiorano Funeral Home has been entrusted with all arrangements.
