Frances Wanelle Ward Matlock Clay died on Tuesday, January 28, 2020, in Midland, Texas, after a lengthy bout with Parkinson's disease. She was born Dec. 29, 1929 in Big Spring, Texas, to William Chesley Ward and Ethel Gertrude (Jeffcoat) Ward. She attended school in Lamesa, Texas. After school, she married Joe Matlock and had three sons, David Shannon, Richard Allan, and Joe Royce.
The family moved to Lovington, New Mexico in 1950. She started working at Lovington National Bank that later became Liberty National Bank. She was honored for 35 years of service in 1985. She was an accomplished seamstress, loving to make her own clothes.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Louis Clay, and ex-husband Joe Matlock. Also, by a son, David Shannon Matlock, a grandson, Michael Shawn Matlock, and her four sisters Edna Vern Ward, Georgia Morine Hendon, Hazel Marie Dunlap, and Willie Geraldine Redwine.
Nell is survived by her sons, Richard Matlock and his wife, Cheryl, of Midland, TX; Jody Matlock of Kingsland, TX; three grandchildren, Lindsay Matlock of Midland, TX; Dakota Matlock of Kingsland, TX; Autumn Matlock Morris of Lovington, NM. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Nell was laid to rest in Resthaven Cemetery, Lovington, NM on Friday, January 31, 2020 at 11:00AM (MST).
