Nancy (Ervin) Butterfield 94, of Keene, NH, died on Sunday, December 1, 2024, at the Covenant Living of Keene, following a period of declining health.
Born on September 17, 1930 in Wadestown, West Virginia, Nancy was the first child of Patrick Bhurman and Hellen Lumma (Hibbs) Ervin. Nancy grew up in Harrison County, WV.
Mrs. Butterfield worked first in the records branch of the FBI in Washington, DC, and later as secretary, administrator and teacher at both The Experiment in International Living and The School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vermont. She was also office manager and concert manager at the Brattleboro Music Center.
Nancy was a graduate of Keene State College and earned a master's degree in library and information science at Simmons College in Boston. She was employed as a reference librarian and head of technical services at the Mason Library at Keene State College. Nancy was a tenured assistant professor at the time of her retirement in 1997.
An avid gardener, skilled cook and baker, and accomplished decorator and seamstress, Mrs. Butterfield was rarely idle. Her hobby in retirement was researching her and her husband's family histories.
She is survived by her husband Charles Butterfield of Keene; four sisters, Sandra Rodriguez of San Gabriel, CA, Etta Jane Purdy, of Blacksburg, VA, Barbara Materazzi (Maury), of Warrenton, VA, Mary Murphy of Belmont, WV; and a nephew, nieces and cousins. Her parents and a sister, Patricia Warters, predeceased her.
A celebration of life will be held at the All Souls Church UU, in Brattleboro, in the spring, at a date and time to be announced.
