Nancy Jones Cornell, 84 years old, passed away on Friday, January 22, 2021. She was the daughter of Lynn & Edith Eubanks Jones, was born in Fairburn, GA on July 25, 1936, in the home that had been in her family since about 1873. She was the granddaughter of Elzie Berry & Callie Terry Jones and George & Nellie Reeves Eubanks. She is preceded in death by her husband, Philip Albert Cornell. She leaves behind three children, Chris & Michael McGinnis, Keith & Filomena Cornell, and Kim Easter, and 7 grandchildren.
Growing up, Nancy helped out in the two grocery stores owned by both grandparents and her dad. Her mother and dad also owned a florist and 2 greenhouses where she enjoyed helping.
Nancy studied piano for about 25 years from a former concert pianist, Powell Everhart. After her marriage, she began teaching piano under Powell Everhart's direction. She taught in her home, and, for a number of years taught in the Baptist Church in Palmetto.
One of her primary interests was history and, as a result, she joined the Atlanta Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She served as Historian, 1st & 3rd Vice President, and President of the Atlanta Chapter. She joined the Old Campbell County Historical Society and served as their President for about 10 years. She also served as Curator of the Campbell County Museum and Director of the Research Room.
While working with the Campbell County Historical Society, Nancy published 18 books about the county's records. She also published 'Fairburn The First Hundred Years', a history of the last county seat of Campbell County. She compiled '1864 Census for Re-organizing The Georgia Militia' which was published by Genealogical Publishing Co in 2000.
Nancy volunteered at the Georgia Department of Archives and History for several years, working on groups of original papers, cleaning and organizing them so they could be used by the public.
Nancy loved animals and occasionally helped at the Etowah Valley Humane Society in Cartersville, GA. She was very proud of the accomplishments of her 3 children as well as her 7 grandchildren. She will be interred beside her husband and her great-grandparents in the Fairburn City Cemetery.
