Our family and community sadly lost a matriarchal pillar on October 8, 2020 when Sue Smith passed away suddenly from a short battle with COVID-19. Sue Smith, 86, was born in Mayfield, Kentucky. She resided the majority of her years in the Tallmadge, Ohio area. Sue was a member of the Akron Baptist Temple for many years and most recently was a member of First Baptist Church in Salisbury, NC. Currently she was attending City Church AC. Sue was a devout Christian and believer in Jesus Christ. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, as well as a sister and an aunt to many. Sue was probably known most for her love of being together with family. For decades, she hosted the extended family gatherings including the annual family Christmas party. She had a love for beach vacations and traveling whenever an opportunity presented itself. Sue retired from Jackson Comfort Systems/Twentieth Century Furnace in 2014 after 35 years of service.
Sue was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Smith; father, Robert Taylor; mother, Lulu "Lulah" Taylor-Pickens, Stepfather, James Pickens; sister, Caroline Richmond; and grandson, John McClish. Sue is survived by her daughters, Cindy (Larry) Gibson; Vickie (Michael) Kostra; son, Greg (Esmeralda) Smith; grandchildren, Tina (Mike) Robertson, Drew Hellebrand-Smith (Derrick), Ashley (David) Thomas, Brittany (Matthew) Wheeler; step granddaughter, Sian (James) Russell; great grandchildren, Brittany (Jack) Porteus, Victoria (Jeremy) Soeder; one great great granddaughter: Kelby, three adopted great granddaughters as well as countless nieces, nephews and family friends.
