Warren Anthony Mattielli, 82, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home surrounded by his wife Joan, daughter, Tina, son, Tony and family and friends on November 25, 2024.
Warren was born on June 25, 1942, in Cle Elum, Washington, to Anthony "Tony" and Verna (Lund) Mattielli. A piece of Cle Elum's history; Warren's father planted the iconic "Willow tree" on East Third Street the day Warren was born, forever linking his legacy to his hometown.
Warren spent his early years in the family home in Cle Elum, where local kids would gather, and he spent much of his time orchestrating pranks. However, Little Boy Blue, as his mother named him, always managed to avoid the consequences of those pranks. He also participated along with his sisters "helping" his mother, Verna, with the morning door-to-door delivery of milk before school.
After graduating from Cle Elum High School in 1960, Warren moved to Healy, Alaska to join his parents, who were working at Usibelli Coal Mine. He initially worked washing dishes at the "cook shack" for his mother but soon realized this wasn't his calling.
Seeking a sense of direction, Warren spent a year furthering his education at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Washington before enlisting in the U.S. Army, where he proudly served for three years. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Alaska where he found his true passion and began a long and successful career at Usibelli Coal Mine (UCM), where he met his wife of 60 years, Joan (Young) Mattielli.
The Coal Mine and the people he worked with were incredibly important to him, and he dedicated himself to the work he loved. Warren retired in 2001 as VP of Operations & General Manager after a distinguished career at UCM working in all aspects of the operation. Throughout his life, he remained deeply connected to the Coal Mine and the people who shaped it until the end.
His kindness, generosity, and larger-than-life presence touched everyone who knew him. His smile could light up any room, and he was the North Star to his family - a guiding force and a constant source of love and support.
Warren will be greatly missed, but his spirit, generosity, and laughter will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Joan (Young) Mattielli; his children, Christina (Tina) Mattielli and Anthony (Tony) Mattielli; his grandchildren, AJ (Jennifer) Mattielli & Alex (Cassandra) Mattielli, and his great-grandchildren, George, Weston, and Aiden; his beloved sister, Jeannie (Mattielli) Precious of Cle Elum, WA; Brother-in-law Pat Young and Sister-in-law Jeradell Young of Fairbanks. He is also survived by an extended family who loved him dearly, too numerous to list but no less cherished.
Warren was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony, and Verna (Lund) Mattielli, his sister Linda Lee (Mattielli) Hall and her husband Danny Hall, his brother-in-law, Tom Precious and the large Young Family of Fairbanks.
In lieu of flowers and donations the family asks that, in honor of Warren, you do something kind for someone - he would have loved that. A Celebration of Life will be held in the spring of 2025. Details will be announced later.
