Morris D. (Butch) Bateman, Jr. passed away peacefully at his home on March 25, 2024 surrounded by his loved ones. Butch was born on November 1, 1946 to Morris and Marjorie Bateman in Lufkin, Texas and later moved to Conroe, Texas in 1948. Butch graduated from Conroe High School in 1965 and attended Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches. Butch's passion to travel the world was shaped early from reading National Geographic. After taking an International Oilfield job in 1974, his love for traveling and wandering was ignited. NL Baroid gave him a one-way ticket to Singapore to start his work life abroad in over 30 countries. Then he joined Oil Field Services Division of SWECO, Inc. to work on oil platforms in oceans around the world. While working for Evac, Butch continued to travel the world but also able to be home on occasion.
In 2002, he met Patty Steele on a blind date, thanks to Tommy Metcalf, and his life was forever changed. On May 23, 2003, he not only married the love of his life, he also gained a loving family. He relished exploring the beauty of many parts of the world with Patty. Beyond his professional pursuits, Butch enjoyed playing tennis, golf and games with friends. He contributed to his community by serving on the board and as President of the Heritage Museum and was an active member of the Panorama Lions Club. Butch's devotion to his faith was evident as he served as a greeter at First Baptist Church Conroe, was a member of the Uplifters class and served lunch at the Salvation Army. He took up his cross everyday in humble service, generosity, and love for others.
Butch is survived by his wife of 20 years, Patty Steele Bateman, step-daughters, Stacy Fallin and husband David; Lisa Bardwell and husband Rodney; his grandchildren-Haley Fallin, Steele Bardwell and Hudson Bardwell. His step-brothers, Tommy Metcalf and his wife Mary Ann; David Metcalf and his wife Susanne; Ricky Metcalf and his step-sister Babette Eikenberg along with many nieces and nephews; two godsons Dane Roper and George Farley. Butch was proceeded in death by his parents, Marjorie and Morris Bateman, his step mother Barbara Metcalf and his brother-in-law Ronnie Eikenberg.
Butch will be remembered for his kindness, his unique sense of humor, his willingness to help anyone in need and his profound love for his family and friends, especially his 3 grandchildren. He faithfully attended as many events as possible to support his grandchildren's activities. His legacy lives on in the wonderful memories of all who knew him and his impact will continue to resonate in the hearts of those touched by his warmth and thoughtfulness.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Thursday, March 28th at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Conroe. The visitation will be held at 1:00 p.m. prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to First Baptist Church in Conroe, The Heritage Museum or any charity of your choice. His family is grateful to Home Care Select Hospice and especially his nurses, Julie and Vicki who provided exceptional care and support.
