On Tuesday, January 26, 2021, Monte Blair Bond Sr., loving husband to Katherine 'Betty' Bond, father of five children, and grandfather of eleven grandchildren and five great grandchildren, passed away peacefully just shy of his 92nd birthday, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Monte was born on February 19, 1929, in Washington D.C. to Thomas Oliver Bond and Dorothy Meem Bond, as the middle son between his brothers, Tom and Bill. After graduating from Greenbelt High School in Greenbelt, Maryland, he spent time traveling across the U.S., spending time in Weed, California, riding motorcycles with his buddies, then moving on to Alaska where he even worked on the Alaskan Railroad. He also proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force as a MP in France.
After making his way back to Maryland, he married Katherine (Oldham) Bond, the mother of his five children, Tracey Upton (Kathy), Melissa 'Lisa' Ashcraft (Randy), Monte Bond Jr. (Jennifer), Kerry Bond-Mason (Matthew), and Samantha Bond Richman (Timothy). At the time of his passing, he and Betty had been married 64 wonderful years. Monte retired from The Washington Post, after a career in the Circulation Department where he was employed for nearly 35 years. College Park, Maryland, was home to the Bond family where all five of the children were raised. After their retirement, he and Betty moved south to Tallahassee, Florida, to enjoy the warmer weather and the company of his extended Bond family. Monte loved the outdoors - fishing on his boat and working out in the yard were among his leisure pastimes. His true passion was playing golf. He was known to enjoy innumerable hours playing - whether it was a round with his buddies (which generally involved a friendly wager) or a tournament paired with his son, you can bet he was always up for a good match. Monte was known for his tight, warm hugs, infectious smile and a very wonderful and recognizable laugh. He had a special soft spot for animals, especially Dachshunds, many of which played larger than life roles over the years. He also had a great love of music, especially music from the 1940's and was known to occasionally grab Betty for a quick dance around the house. Monte was truly a devoted husband and father, and will be missed greatly by his family and all who knew him.
