MY DADDY... MY HERO... MY FRIEND...
Daddy was born in Piedmont Al, and grew up in Mableton GA.
In 1961, he joined the United States Air Force, and was stationed in South Korea. There he met and married a petite Korean girl named HoePil, working at the base mess hall.
He didn’t speak Korean and her any English. He would finish his days work, and sit on the steps outside the cafeteria and sometimes wait for hours for Momma to get off from work, so that he could buy her a coke, or take her to the movie in town. Exhausted everyday, but never wanting to tell him no, they would sometimes see a movie, and momma would take her shoes off, sip her coke and fall asleep on his shoulder. Daddy didn’t mind, as long as he was sitting next to her. Before too long momma was pregnant with me, and daddy was sent back to the states. Afraid he would never see momma or me again, he began writing... everyone, to try and get permission to return to South Korea immediately. I’ve read those letters, to GA’s senator, to his Commander and Chief, and too his daddy; my grandfather, who had believed that the Korean women were all trying to trap American soldiers into marrying them, so grandaddy at first refused to give daddy consent for him to marry... desperate he tried for almost a year, asking, begging, and writing weekly letters to anyone he thought could help him.
Thiers was truly a love story made for the big screen. For now, I’ll just say, I’m grateful and proud that my daddy never gave up, he finally married my momma and brought us to the United States. Transferred to Travis Air Force base, in Vacaville CA. where we lived for 3 years, and where my little brother was born.
