Demonstrating the quiet mettle which characterized her life, Mildred Alida (Andrews) Young, 98, completed her worldly journey on Monday evening, June 28, 2021, at her home in Pittsburg. With her mother's Bible resting in her hands and surrounded by her family, she passed peacefully into eternity.
Born among the Canadian prairie wheat fields of Camrose, Alberta, in 1922, Mildred was the daughter of Jennie Matson and George Andrews. She was proud of her Swedish and Scottish lineage, but most of all to be an American citizen. She lived her life a continuous quest of serving to honor the ethics and values of her heritage.
At the age of four, Millie traveled by train with her parents and her twin brothers, Lawrence and Leslie, to Coaticook, Que., to be near Andrews family members. The family subsequently moved to Colebrook, N.H. With the arrival of the Great Depression, the Andrews family worked and lived on a number of area farms. At the age of five, Mildred often followed her brothers to school and waited for them at the end of the day. Soon she was noticed by a teacher in one of the local one-room schools that could be found in each community, and she was invited in. Thus began her lifelong appreciation for education. She often talked about her memories of the Bear Rock School and the Grand Division School in Bungy. Her thirst for knowledge saw her thrive in each school. Recognizing her love of learning, Mildred's mother took in laundry to help pay for high school. At the age of thirteen, Mildred was able to work for and live with the Wright family and attend Pittsburg School. Four years later, in 1938, she graduated as valedictorian of her class. She dreamed of a life as a teacher, but finances dictated a different future.
In 1940, Mildred married Phillip Young and began her adult life in Pittsburg which continued for eighty-one years. Together they raised six children and taught each one to appreciate that integrity and a positive work ethic were the key ingredients to a successful, healthy, happy life.
By 1954 Mildred and Phillip struck out on an adventure which colored the remainder of their lives. Sensing that tourism was going to become a major part of the local economy as small family farms faded from local view, they established the Mountain View Cabins & Campground along with Young's Store. Both businesses thrived and were later sold to two of their children. From 1954 until age 97, when she reluctantly retired because of loss of sight, Mildred often worked seven days a week while raising her family. 5 a.m. was a normal start of the day that saw her ironing bed sheets and pillow cases for the cabins because the guests would be expecting perfectly pressed linens that she had hung out to dry before retiring for the night just before midnight. In between those hours she got her kids fed and off to school, did the family laundry, cleaned the house, baked and cooked the family meals. By 7:30 in the morning she was on her way to the store to take care of customers, place orders and pay bills. She was involved in every aspect of the business and never asked an employee to do a job she had not herself done.
Mildred is survived by her six children and their spouses: Judith (Merrill) Dalton, Winston (Andrea) Young, Leavitt (Donna) Young, Carlene (Jarvis) Fish, Leonard (Marilyn) Young, and Duane (Luanne) Young; her twelve grandchildren: Chip Dalton, Shannon Sullivan, Joseph Lakin, Derek Young, Kimberly Remick, Jason Young, Jennifer Fish, Cyn Fish, Nathan Young, Andrew Young, Mindy Young, and Allyson Young. Additional family includes great grandchildren, nieces and nephews Arnold Young, Donna Caron and Lawrence Andrews, as well as cousins locally and in the Canadian provinces.
There are no public calling hours. A funeral service will be held on Sunday, July 11, 2021, at 2 p.m. at the Farnham Memorial United Methodist Church in Pittsburg. Guests are encouraged to dress casually. Mildred's final resting place will be the Pittsburg Hollow Cemetery where she will lie beside her husband of 61 years, Phillip Young.
