Michael J. Stemkoski, 73, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2020 in St. George, Utah.
Michael was born August 31, 1946 the son of Stephen and Sophie Stemkoski. After graduating from Rome Catholic High School in 1965, Mike went on to Utica College where he graduated with a degree in accounting. Mike became a CPA and eventually obtained a Master's degree in accounting at Utah State University.
Known as "Stemmer" by his friends, Michael's real passion was teaching, and he was an incredible teacher and mentor. He taught at a number of colleges including St. John Fisher College in Rochester, New York, Weber State University in Ogden, Utah and Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. Although Michael taught business and accounting courses, he also loved music and poetry. Michael firmly believed that students should "learn by doing". In that regard, his classes often involved "projects" in the community whereby his students worked with well-known artists raising money in the community while also learning valuable accounting and business lessons. Michael's dedication to his students led to countless lasting friendships.
Michael was always thinking, dreaming and creating as an outlet for himself and others. He tackled important issues that he felt strongly about. His accomplishments include a documentary about civil rights, racism and the human spirit's inextinguishable desire for growth and hope.
Michael loved basketball and the outdoors, especially the mountains. He was a tireless cheerleader for those he was close to. He will be remembered for his larger-than-life personality that was contagious and made those around him smile.
Michael is preceded in death by his mother, father, a brother, Walter Stemkoski and a daughter, Tania Clark. He is survived by his sister, Elaine (Louis) Viviani; a daughter, Elaine (Sharman) Sutherland; four grandchildren, Matthew Clark, Andrew Clark, Adam Sutherland and Rachel Sutherland; and five nieces and nephews, Louis Viviani, Peter (Shari) Viviani, Erica (Jerome Stewart) Viviani, Stephen (Tricia) Stemkoski and Paul (Heidi) Stemkoski.
A graveside service will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to a charity of your choice.
