Dr. Michael Smith, 69, left us on June 21, 2021 after a battle with Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS). He was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, as well as a confidante and shoulder to lean on.
Mike was born in Akron, Ohio to Harold and Evelyn Smith. They later relocated to be near family in Vandalia, MO. Around 12 years of age, the family returned to Ohio and planted their roots.
Mike graduated from Cuyahoga Falls High school in 1970. It was there that he met the love of his life, Trish. They began dating when Mike was a freshman in college and Trish was a senior in high school. The couple then wed on September 8, 1973 and enjoyed 47 years of marriage. On February 13, 1984, they welcomed a daughter, Ashley. Mike and Ashley shared a deep love of animals, especially dogs and horses. He loved trail riding and was also her groom for many horse shows. Mike enjoyed his horses and cars alike...the faster the better! He also had an affinity for baseball throughout his lifetime, as both a player and spectator. Mike found joy in golfing and fishing. However, the true lights of his life were his daughter and grandchildren.
Education was important to Mike, and with the supportive backing of Trish, he went on to earn his Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctorate degrees in Clinical Psychology from The University of Akron. He then went on to become employed as a Clinical Psychologist in several different roles, including in his specialty of forensics. Most notably, Mike devoted 24 years of service to Akron Family Institute, where he poured his heart into helping others and advocating for his patients and the improvement of their mental health. He was indeed a beloved member of the staff and management, and he leaves a legacy of contributions both personally and professionally.
Mike is survived by his wife, Patricia (Trish); daughter, Ashley; grandchildren Finley and Lincoln. He is also survived by his brother, Patrick (Teresa) Smith; brother-in-law, Thomas (Tamara) Slopek; niece, Cortney (Justin) Davis; nephews, Brandon (Natalie) and Seth Dowler; and many friends.
The family will receive visitors at the Dunn-Quigley Funeral Home on June 25, 2021 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and June 26, 2021 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. with a memorial service to follow. The funeral home is located at 3333 Kent Rd., Stow, OH 44224. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Humane Society, Happy Trails, or the American Red Cross.
