Michael Terrence McCartney, 78, of Bluffton, SC passed away peacefully on May 24, 2021 after complications following a last attempt to fix what had been going wrong with his heart.
Mike was born in Newark, NJ on October 26, 1942, the son of the late William and Rita (Duffy) McCartney. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his brother, Joseph McCartney, and his sister Maureen Dabeck. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Carol (Kirsch) McCartney, his children, Michael McCartney (Lori), Kathleen Christensen (Niels), Meghan Hathaway (Brent), Brendan McCartney (Megan), and Noelle McCartney. He leaves behind 9 grandchildren, Ivey McCartney, Anna-Leigh McCartney, Will Christensen, Emma Christensen, Sean Christensen, Ellie Hathaway, Rosalie Hathaway, Maeve McCartney, and Eamonn McCartney.
Mike graduated from St. Mary's High School in Rutherford, NJ in 1960, where he excelled playing baseball, ultimately landing in St. Mary's Hall of Fame. After a quick stop at Seton Hall University, Mike served in the United States Air Force, and then returned to Rutherford to establish a successful plumbing contracting business and raise a family with the love of his life, Mary Carol. A pillar of decency in Rutherford, throughout his life Mike volunteered his time and efforts to a myriad of groups and causes within the community, none more important to him than the nearly 30 years he dedicated to the Rutherford American Legion baseball team as coach and manager.
