Sturbridge: Michael J. Dube, Sr., 83, of Poplar Ave, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 22nd, after a brief illness. The son of Joseph and Frances (Vincent) Dube, he was born in Winthrop, MA. His loving mother Frances had significant influence in Mike's life and laid the strong foundation for his lifelong successes.
He attended Athol High School, where he lettered in six sports and graduated in 1956. Upon graduation, Mike attended UMass Amherst where he played collegiate baseball, was named to two honorary societies, served as president of Kappa Sigma fraternity, and sang with his rock vocal group The Shades. After starting his teaching career at Bartlett High School, he later transferred to Tantasqua Regional High School, where he worked for over 30 years as a teacher, coached six different sports, and served as athletic director. During his first year of coaching baseball in 1977, the boys' varsity team won the Massachusetts State Championship with his coaching guidance. He loved coaching and stayed in contact with many of his student players throughout the years. Mike was inducted into the Athol High School Athletic Hall of Fame, the Tantasqua Regional High School Hall of Fame, and the Massachusetts Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame. After retiring from Tantasqua, Mike enjoyed playing golf, telling stories with his buddies, watching sports, and spending time with his large and loving family.
Mike is predeceased by his wife of 29 years, Catherine M. (Sweet) Dube. He leaves his daughter Lynn F. Saunders and her husband Wilbur (Bub) of Winterport, ME, and his son Michael J. Dube, Jr. and his wife Jessica of Sandwich, MA. He also leaves three stepdaughters Tamra A. Murphy of Merrimack, NH; Tricia A. Murphy and her husband Michael of Lynnfield, MA; and Tara A. Murphy of Rochdale, MA; as well as sons Richard E. Dube and his wife Jenny of Brookfield, MA; and Ryan E. Dube and his wife Nichole of Tampa, FL. He has 16 beloved grandchildren, Patrick, Meghan, Nicholas, Jake, Morgan, Savannah, Ian, Brandon, Michael, Abby, Molly, Michael, Cameron, Colin, Nathan, and Lundyn; a great grandchild, Cyan; a half-brother, Dave Dube; and his cat Blue.
Calling hours for Mike will be held on Thursday, June 16th from 5pm to 8pm in the Daniel T. Morrill Funeral Home, 130 Hamilton St., Southbridge. Burial in North Cemetery, Sturbridge will be private. A Celebration of Life for Mike with be held on Friday, June 17th at The Publick House in Sturbridge.
