Herberger- Melvin 'Mel' Edward. Age 78, born August 8, 1947 in Swormville, NY as the youngest child of Florence and Aloysius, passed September 21, 2025 at his home in Berkeley Springs, WV, after succumbing to a sudden battle with brain cancer; surrounded by his 'girls' (wife Carol, daughters Katie and Amanda, and loyal canines Winnie and Bella).
Mel is the beloved husband to Carol (nee Brumbaugh), cherished father to Katie (John) Prible and Amanda (fianc? Alex Hutton), and adored grandpa to Ella, Evan, and Owen (Prible); he is the beloved brother- survived by Judy (late Charles) Ross, Faith (John) Ball, Noel (Geraldine), Niles (late Donna), and Joy (James) Jurek; brother-in-law to Thomas (Maxine), Jane (Mark) Wentlent, and John (Gretchen); and favorite uncle to dozens of nieces and nephews.
Mel met Carol at Yankton College, SD, fusing 'car-a-mel' as their forever signature name. He entered the US Marine Corps after graduation in 1969, serving as 1LT. in Vietnam with distinction and earning the Bronze Star for Valor, attaining rank of Capt. upon leaving. The college sweethearts married in 1971, celebrating 54 years of marriage this summer.
As a proud member of the VFW Post 4019, life member of the American Legion Post 60, DAV, Moose Lodge 1483, and faithful parishioner (St. Mary's, Swormville; Church of the Nativity, UCC; and Mount Olivet UMC), countless individuals have found Mel as an unforgettable and treasured friend.

A memorial and remembrance service will be held in Berkeley Springs, WV on October 19, 2025.
