Melvin Dean "Dennie" Hayes, age 89 passed away on Wednesday, July 17, 2024 at his home in Kermit, TX surrounded by his family. He was born on June 16, 1935 in Micawber, OK to William Leo and Lelauh (Curry) Hayes. Dennie married Donna Pipkin on December 6, 1957 in Kermit, TX and they shared 66 wonderful years together.
Dennie grew up in Micawber, OK and graduated from Gypsy High School. He moved to West Texas in 1956 to work in the oil field. He then met Donna Pipkin at the Oakwood Drive Inn in Kermit and they later married in 1957 in Kermit. Dennie spent his entire working career in the oil field working for: Laughlin Brother Drilling Co, Maxwell Oil Co, Transwestern, Enron retiring in 1995. Dennie was an avid hunter harvesting Deer, Elk, Dove and Pheasants over the years and he was an avid Fisherman who never turned down a good fishing trip with friends. Dennie was a 66 year member of the First United Methodist Church in Kermit. He was active with the Kermit Masonic Lodge #1258 where he served as Master on several occasions and was 3rd degree Master Mason. He was a 32 degree Scottish Rite member of the El Paso District and Past Worthy Patron of Kermit and Monahans Order of the Eastern Star. Dennie was active in the 4-H and often went by the nicknames "PawPaw" and "Pappy" to his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife: Donna Hayes of Kermit, TX; son: Rodney Hayes and wife Betty of Kermit, TX; sister: Shirley Mills and husband Michael of Tulsa, OK; grandchildren: Summer Crawford and husband Robbie, and Lura Fabbri and husband Duncan; great-grandchildren: Carter Fabbri, Jansyn Kahn, Finley Fabbri, and Alissa Crawford, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents: William and LeLauh Hayes; son: Mike Hayes; and brothers: Leon Hayes and Marvin Hayes.
The family will receive visitor at Family Services Funeral Chapel on Friday from 6-7 pm.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, July 20, 2024 at the former Methodist Church on the corner of Haley and Lunsford Streets in Kermit (currently the Apostolic Church).
Burial will follow at Kermit Cemetery. Pallbearers are Johnny Walker, Kelly Bradford, David Session, Shawn Hyde, William Pilkington, Johnny Lalonde, Deagan Arnold and Kevin Arnold. Honorary pallbearers are: Carter Fabbri, Duncan Fabbri, Mark McKenzie, Robert Roark, Glen Hayes, Wayne Hayes, Randy Hayes and the brothers of the Kermit Masonic Lodge #1258.
