Melvin Chipps of Rittman, Ohio went to the arms of the Lord on November 24, 2021: succumbing to the effects of Covid. Mel was born 11/8/44 in Webster Springs, West Virginia to Elmer Lane Chipps and Myrtle Esterline Chipps (Cowger) who will meet him at the heavenly gates with brothers, Coy and Denzil and sisters, Freda Alderman, Opal Yates and Mae Seeley. His sister, Belle Anderson survives.
A graduate of Wadsworth High School in 1963, Mel attended Wayne College. Mel was a true public servant. He was a Rittman police officer from 1971 -1988 when he was forced to retire due to a work injury. Mel was Rittman's first detective and first DARE officer. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he was an air traffic controller, who served from 1966 to 1969. Mel enjoyed farming, flying, woodcrafts and his family.
Mel leaves behind wife, Sharon (Bigler); daughters, Debbie (Mike) Knapic and Pam Chipps; as well as grandchildren, Trevor, Hannah and Garrett Knapic; and numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Rittman United Methodist Church. Graveside service with military honors will be held at 12:45 p.m. on Friday, June 24, 2022 at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, 10175 Rawiga Rd., Seville, OH 44273.
