Melvin "Mel" Billups, age 71, resident of Abilene, TX, died February 1, 2022. He was born May 3, 1950, in Lubbock, TX. He graduated from Monterey High School in 1968 and from Texas Tech University (1973) with an Accounting Degree. Mel was an accomplished athlete in high school as the quarterback for Monterey Varsity football team as well as catcher for the baseball team. He served in the Army Reserves for 5 years. Mel's career with the United States Postal Service began as a letter carrier and quickly promoted to management positions in Norman OK, Amarillo, Andrews and Lubbock before completed his 37-year career as Postmaster of Abilene, Texas. After his retirement from the Post Office, he worked as an IT Assistant for Jim Ned CISD for 9 years.
Mel was blessed with a wonderful singing voice and enjoyed performing with various vocal groups from high school through his adult years. He was very instrumental in volunteering in the music ministry at Tuscola United Methodist Church. He enjoyed playing golf, traveling, visiting family, and making his yard beautiful. On the block where he lived, he made sure all were neighbors and none were strangers. He was known for always giving a helping hand and serving others.
Mel is survived by his beloved wife, Jo Billups, children Marc Billups of Dallas, Angela (Justin) Smith of Irmo, SC and stepson, Matt Luna of Lubbock; grandchildren Lucas, Laurel, Lily Kate, and Levi Smith; siblings Marcheta (Alan) Jochimsen of Midland, and Lynniece (Jim) Hill of Lubbock, six nieces and nephews; and his special cat Ozzie. He is predeceased by his parents, Joe Billups and Judy Billups.
Visitation in Abilene will be Monday, February 7, 6-8pm at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home. Visitation in Lubbock will be Tuesday, February 8, 6-8 pm at Resthaven Funeral Home. Graveside service will be Wednesday, February 9 at 2pm at Resthaven Memorial Park.
